South Africa’s opposition is relentless, despite a failed impeachment campaign to unseat president Jacob Zuma from office.
Leaders of several political parties led by Julius Malema have vowed to turn up the heat on Zuma, who they claim desires to turn the country into a ‘’ banana republic.’‘
“History will record that the ANC MPs have chosen to defend a crook, a non-credible president, instead of defending the constitution,” said member of opposition and Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane.
Deputy Justice Minister John Jeffery said: “The ruling party has taken a position which not only violates the Constitution, but that does not put an end to this violation by not taking account of the judgment of the highest court of the country.”
Although several historical political members of the ANC and several personalities have called on Jacob Zuma to resign, officially, the ANC remains firmly behind the president.
The ruling party voted against the resignation of Jacob Zuma by 233 votes against the opposition’s 143.
The South African president has been under fire following the scandal that involves renovations of his private residence in Nkandla, which were carried out with public money.
